Canadian Valerie Letourneau and Scottish fighter Joanne Calderwood will make history at UFC Ottawa when they compete in the first ever UFC women's flyweight bout, the promotion announced on Thursday.

The two fighters have verbally agreed to the fight, which will be contested at 125-pounds, on the June 18th card at TD Place Arena in Ottawa.

A UFC spokesperson tells TSN that this is not the launch of a new women's division and that no rankings will be created for a 125-pound women's class, however UFC officials are looking into possibly opening a women's flyweight division in the future.

Letourneau returns to the octagon for the first time since suffering a unanimous decision loss to strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the co-main event of UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia on November 15th of last year.

Prior to the defeat, the Montreal native had won four straight bouts, including 2015 victories over Maryna Moroz and Jessica Rakoczy.

The 32-year-old holds an 8-4 overall MMA record.

Calderwood was victorious in her last bout, a unanimous decision over Cortney Casey that earned her Fight of the Night honours at UFC Fight Night 72 in Glasgow, Scotland on July 18th of 2015.

Prior to that victory, she was defeated for the first time by Maryna Maroz at Fight Night 64 by first round submission after capturing her first nine MMA bouts.

The Irvine, Scotland fighter is 10-1 over her MMA career.

The UFC Ottawa card is already sold out and will be headlined by a welterweight bout between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson
