Burlington native and over-ager Stephen Harper, who was acquired from the Hamilton Bulldogs at the trade deadline, led the way for Niagara with two goals and three assists and was named the game's first star.
New York Islanders first round draft pick Josh Ho-Sang added a goal and three assists while being named the third star.
Chris Paquette, Josh Wesley, and Pavel Jenys also scored for the IceDogs who won their eighth straight game of the playoffs.
Justin Scott, Adrian Carbonara and Julius Nattinen each scored for the Colts.
It was a physical game by both teams. Barrie and Niagara each received 17 minutes in penalties, including a pair of game misconducts.
Colts' defenseman Michael Webster was given a game misconduct just over six minutes into the game after a check to the head of IceDogs forward Kyle Langdon, who stayed in the game.
IceDogs' forward Brendan Perlini, a draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes, also received a match penalty in the second period after a cross check to Cameron Lizotte, who remained on the ice for several minutes before staying in the game.
Both players will likely face one game suspensions for the penalties.
Game 4 goes Wednesday night at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines. Puck drops is at 7pm ET.
