FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Toronto FC started slow but finished strong for a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday.
Sebastian Giovinco scored in the 58th minute to tie it, and Clint Irwin had seven saves to help Toronto snap a two-game losing streak.
"A big part of it is coming down to tempo for us. ..." TFC head coach Greg Vanney said. "We're going out to get the result in the second half, it seems like, when we need to start the game going out to try to get the result.
"We're almost starting the game with an unintended mentally to not lose the game because we're on the road, or to draw, or to whatever. It becomes where we're one step late, or we're half a second too long on the ball, or everything is just a little too tentative and a little too slow."
Jozy Altidore slipped behind the defence on a breakaway and dropped the ball to a streaking Giovinco, who scored the equalizer from just outside the top of the box.
Kelyn Rowe's header into the corner, set up by Je-Vaughn Watson's long cross from the right wing, gave New England (1-1-4) a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
"I haven't seen the replay, the guy serves a good ball in and it's a good header to score," Irwin said of Rowe's goal. "I'd have to see it again to see what went wrong but I think the reaction was the most important thing.
"You know after that goal we created some chances. Seba (Giovinco) had one in the box, Jozy had a header and that's the most important thing, just the character that you show after those moments where you maybe could have done better. And I thought overall that's the most important thing that we can take from this is just guys banded together and fought and grinded to get the result."
The Revolution's Lee Nguyen scored the apparent winner in extra time, but was called offside.
Irwin's seven saves were one shy of his career high and his most since 2014.
"Clint has been a phenomenal addition for us," Vanney said of his goalkeeper. "He's not the guy in the off-season who necessarily got the headlines when we picked him up, but for us, it was one of the most important pickups. He's shown that he's a very stable figure back there."
Toronto (1-2-2) is winless in its last eight games against the Revolution.
