Season series: The San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks twice in three games over a seven-day stretch. San Jose forward Joe Pavelski had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win at Rogers Arena on Feb. 28, and Brent Burns had a goal and an assist in the Sharks' 3-2 victory at Rogers Arena on March 3. Four Canucks scored, and goalie Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves in a 4-2 win at SAP Center on March 5.
Sharks team scope: The San Jose Sharks ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, when they clinched a Stanley Cup Playoff berth. "We have a good group, so I'm very excited to be back [in the playoffs]," Joe Thornton, who had two goals, told NBCSN. "I feel good. I think [coach Peter DeBoer] does a good job about managing how we feel. Really, I love who I'm playing with in [Pavelski] and [Tomas Hertl]. I feel really good and really confident and healthy." Thornton has at least one point in each of San Jose's past 29 wins. The Sharks trail the second-place Anaheim Ducks by four points in the Pacific Division and the first-place Kings by five points. San Jose's 25 road wins are tied with the Washington Capitals for most in the NHL.
Canucks team scope: Defenseman Christopher Tanev (upper body) and forward Markus Granlund (upper body) returned to practice Monday. Coach Willie Desjardins said Granlund likely will play Tuesday and Tanev could return Thursday against the Sharks. Granlund has missed the past seven games, and Tanev the past five. "I just want to make sure when I'm back, I am going to play the rest of the games," Tanev told the Canucks website. "I don't want to come back for two or three, and then be out again." Desjardins also said defenseman Luca Sbisa (upper body), who hasn't played since March 14, may not return before the end of the season. Vancouver has lost its past eight games (0-7-1), scoring seven total goals, and has been shut out four times in the past six games. Desjardins is hoping the Canucks have a high compete level despite having been eliminated from playoff contention. "Everyone is playing for a spot down the stretch," Desjardins said. "All these games are important; the players need to leave their mark."
