It's been a season of frustration for Ottawa Senators forward Clarke MacArthur.
The 30-year-old MacArthur has missed almost the entire year with a concussion after tripping over a Columbus Blue Jackets player and hitting his head on the ice Oct. 14.
"I needed toothpicks to keep my eyes open for the next two weeks," MacArthur told the Ottawa Citizen last week. "The headaches. I can't even describe the feelings. It was awful."
MacArthur, who also missed time last season with a concussion, first felt symptoms come on after taking a hit from teammate Mark Fraser in a pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens in September.
The Lloydminster, Alta., native didn't give his head enough recovery time following the pre-season hit, rushing back for the start of the Senators' regular season.
"I feel like if I had just went with my gut instinct from Day 1, I would have missed 10 games and I would have played the rest of the year," MacArthur told the Ottawa Citizen. "It would have been a different situation. It could have been a completely different year."
Ottawa shut down MacArthur and defenceman Dion Phaneuf for the year on Monday.
