WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Alex Chiasson and Zack Smith scored and the Ottawa Senators snapped a four-game road losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.
Andrew Hammond stopped 20 shots for his sixth win of the season as Ottawa improved to 6-0-1 in its last seven against the Jets.
Mark Scheifele scored the tying goal, his team-leading 26th, for Winnipeg at 6:55 of the third period, but Chiasson put Ottawa back in front less than two minutes later. A deflected pass went off Scheifele's skate, leaving a loose puck in front of the Jets' net. Chiasson quickly jumped on it and slapped it in for his eighth of the season.
Michael Hutchinson finished with 18 saves for Winnipeg.
Smith opened the scoring on Ottawa's first shot of the game as Mark Stone found Smith in the high slot, beating Hutchinson glove side for his 22nd goal of the season.
Stone was carrying the puck through the neutral zone midway through the second period and Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien stepped up and caught Ottawa's leading scorer with his head down with a crushing and clean hit at the blue line. While some Senators players jumped to their teammate's defense, Stone went directly to the locker room.
Stone soon returned and finished the second period, but before the third, the Senators announced he would not return after sustaining a chest injury.
Game notes
Ottawa continues its three-game road trip with stops in Minnesota and Philadelphia on Thursday and Saturday. ... The Jets continue their final homestand of the season with two Central Division opponents as they host Chicago on Friday and Minnesota on Sunday.
