Season series: The Washington Capitals defeated the Ottawa Senators twice this season at Verizon Center. Forward Michael Latta had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win on Dec. 16. Forward Alex Ovechkin scored twice and forward Nicklas Backstrom had three assists in a 7-1 win on Jan. 10.
Capitals team scope: Washington, the first team this season to secure a place in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, gets a second chance at clinching the Metropolitan Division after its first opportunity resulted in a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Goalie Braden Holtby was pulled in the third period and remains five shy of tying Martin Brodeur's single-season record of 48 wins. "You can talk all you want about how many points you've accumulated during the regular season, but once you get to the playoffs, that's all out the window," defenseman Brooks Orpik told the Capitals website. "We better start playing a little bit better." Forward Andre Burakovsky has goals in consecutive games.
Senators team scope: Goalie Craig Anderson will start for Ottawa, which begins a back-to-back set that finishes Wednesday at the New York Islanders. The lines in practice Monday showed no changes from a 5-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, when the Senators scored three shorthanded goals. "It's not going to get any easier," defenseman Marc Methot, who had one of those goals, told the Senators website. "We know that we have some pretty good opponents coming up. … It'll be a nice little challenge for us and it'll see where we're at with regards to how we've been playing lately." Forward Alex Chiasson has goals in consecutive games. Forwards Mika Zibanejad (three goals, two assists) and Mike Hoffman (one goal, four assists) have four-game point streaks.
