Season series: The Ottawa Senators defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 at Canadian Tire Centre on Nov. 12. Defenseman Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Forward Sven Baertschi and defenseman Alexander Edler scored for the Canucks.
Senators team scope: Ottawa did not practice Wednesday in Vancouver after a 4-1 road win against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. It was Ottawa's fourth victory in a row to match a season-high win streak from late November. General manager Bryan Murray took questions about the Senators' plans heading into the NHL Trade Deadline, which is Monday. Murray said he won't trade for a big-name impending free agent. He expects the return of forward Clarke MacArthur, out with a concussion since the fourth game of the season, and Murray likened it to adding a top-six forward. Players, including impending free agent forward Alex Chiasson, are aware of the approaching deadline. "It's kind of nice that we're on the road. You've always got things going on," Chiasson told the Ottawa Citizen. "Guys will go out for lunches and dinners. Sometimes, when you're at home, you're stuck by yourself and you get to thinking about that. But it's part of the game. It's the business side and you just have to stick with it." Defenseman Erik Karlsson played 21:19 Tuesday, his least time on ice since Nov. 9, 2013, according to the Citizen.
Canucks team scope: Forward Radim Vrbata (lower body) will not play. Coach Willie Desjardins told the Canucks website that Vrbata likely will miss a week. The Canucks did not practice on Wednesday. Forward Markus Granlund, acquired in a trade Monday with the Calgary Flames for forward prospect Hunter Shinkaruk, skated on a line with Linden Vey and Emerson Etem in practice Tuesday. Granlund said he was disappointed by the trade but pleased to join former Flames teammate in Baertschi. "There's some hard feelings, but I'm excited for a fresh start," Granlund told the Canucks website. "Sven said it's [a team of] good guys and I'm excited." Defenseman Matt Bartkowski did not skate Monday but was back at practice Tuesday. He appeared to injure his elbow in a 5-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. That stopped a four-game losing streak, in which the Canucks allowed 20 goals.
