{allcanada} Devils acquire Smith-Pelly from Canadiens

The New Jersey Devils acquired forward Devante Smith-Pelly from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday in a trade for forward Stefan Matteau.

"[The Devils are] a hard-working team," Smith-Pelly told Sportsnet. "We've played them a couple of times this year, and those games are always tough and tight-checking. Hopefully I can go there and help the team make the [Stanley Cup Playoffs]."

Smith-Pelly, 23, has six goals and 12 points in 46 games this season, and 21 goals and 55 points in 195 NHL games with the Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks. He was selected by the Ducks in the second round (No. 42) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

"I'm hard working. Pretty much exactly how you described [the Devils] as a whole: gritty, feisty," Smith-Pelly said. "I pride myself on being able to jump up and down the lineup and being able to produce offense in spurts. I've done it in spurts and hopefully I can do it on a consistent basis now."

Matteau, 22, has one goal in 20 games this season and three goals and five points in 44 NHL games. He was selected by the Devils in the first round (No. 29) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

The Devils also traded defenseman Eric Gelinas to the Colorado Avalanche and forward Lee Stempniak to the Boston Bruins for draft picks.
