Season series: Forward Nazem Kadri scored in the fifth round of a shootout to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 8 at Air Canada Centre. Forwards PA Parenteau and James van Riemsdyk scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs; forwards Lee Stempniak and Kyle Palmieri had power-play goals for the Devils.

Devils team scope: Defenseman John Moore is expected to return from a lower-body injury that has kept him out for three games. Moore was paired with Seth Helgeson at practice Wednesday, according to Northjersey.com, and defenseman Damon Severson skated with forward Tuomo Ruutu, a recent healthy scratch. However, coach John Hynes said it wasn't necessarily an indication Severson will exit the lineup. "We'll have to make a decision here, probably tomorrow morning once we make sure John is ready to go," he said. Hynes didn't name his starting goalie and left open the possibility Keith Kinkaid could give Cory Schneider a night off. Forward Mike Cammalleri will miss a second straight game because of a hand injury and won't return this week. Stempniak has five goals in as many games; his goal and assist in a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday was his third multipoint game during that span.

Maple Leafs team scope: Mike Babcock will coach in his 1,000th regular-season NHL game. Babcock is in his first season with Toronto after previous stints with the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings; he guided them to a combined three Stanley Cup Finals and won the 2008 Stanley Cup in Detroit. "I want to be the best coach of my generation," Babcock told Sportsnet on Wednesday, noting the success of the Chicago Blackhawks' Joel Quenneville and the Los Angeles Kings' Darryl Sutter is making that a challenge. This is the Maple Leafs' only home game for the next two weeks. They come off a 4-3 win Tuesday against the Boston Bruins courtesy of a Parenteau power-play goal in overtime. Kadri has goals in three of the past four games.
