The Toronto Argonauts avoided free agency with star safety Jermaine Gabriel on Friday, signing the 25-year-old to a contract. The team announced the move Friday.
The Canadian recorded 51 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles for the Argos in 2015, his third in the CFL. Gabriel missed six games last year.
Toronto still has the likes of defensive lineman Cleyon Laing, linebacker Cory Greenwood, quarterback Trevor Harris and slotback Chad Owens slated to become free agents on Feb. 9 if not signed to contracts.
The Argonauts are optimistic they'll be able to re-sign Greenwood. Contract talks between Harris and the Argos have also picked up, according to Scianitti.
