Sweden forward William Nylander was ruled out for the remainder of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship with a head injury, the IIHF announced Sunday.
Nylander was sent back to Toronto on Sunday, according to the Toronto Star.
"William isn't 100 percent fit for playing a game, so it was an easy decision, but it took us a while to get to that point," Swedish doctor Per Adolf Bergsten told the paper.
Nylander, selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the eighth pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, has not played since he was checked by Switzerland forward Chris Egli in the head late in the first period of Sweden's 8-3 win on Dec. 26. Egli received a game misconduct and was suspended three games by the World Junior Championship Disciplinary Panel.
Nylander, 19, is second in the American Hockey League with 14 goals and 34 points in 27 games with the Toronto Marlies. He scored on his first shot playing for Sweden before leaving after the hit.
"The decision for William not to play the rest of the tournament was the right decision," Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello told the National Post.
Defenseman Adam Ollas Mattsson (Calgary Flames) will also miss the rest of the tournament because of a lower-body injury.
Sweden advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0 win against Slovakia on Saturday and plays Finland on Monday (9 a.m. ET; NHLN, TSN). The United States faces Russia in the other semifinal game (1 p.m. ET; NHLN, TSN).
