The Calgary Stampeders have released veteran linebacker Juwan Simpson in what GM John Hufnagel called a very difficult decision Monday.
Simpson has been with the Stampeders since 2008 and a starter with the team since 2010. In 11 games with the Stamps last year, Simpson had 27 tackles, two sacks, and an interception.
"This was a very difficult decision but one that was necessary because of salary-cap considerations and the need to give an opportunity to younger players," Hufnagel said in a team release. "I thank Juwan for everything he has done on and off the field for the Calgary Stampeders. It was a true pleasure to have been Juwan's coach these past eight years and I wish him all the best."
Simpson had 395 tackles, 24 sacks, and three interceptions in 115 games with the Stamps. He was also a three-time West Division All-Star, one-time CFL All-Star and West Division nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player, and helped the Stamps to two Grey Cup wins.
