LOS ANGELES -- Jeff Carter scored the game-winning goal in the third period, and Vincent Lecavalier had an assist in his Los Angeles Kings debut in a 2-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Staples Center on Thursday.
Carter tapped in Marian Gaborik's pass at 8:05 of the third period in his first game back since he missed five with an upper-body injury. Lecavalier fed defenseman Jake Muzzin from the boards, and Muzzin scored on a wrist shot 2:53 into the third.
Kings goalie Jonathan Quick made 25 saves, including point-blank stops on Brad Boyes and Nazem Kadri in the final three minutes with Los Angeles clinging to a one-goal lead. Quick's bid for his 41st NHL shutout, which would be the most ever by an American-born goalie, ended when Toronto's Peter Holland scored a power-play goal at 10:05 of the third.
Toronto (16-16-7) had its three-game winning streak end and took its third regulation loss in 13 games despite 39 saves from goalie James Reimer in his first start since Dec. 3.
Los Angeles (26-12-2) has won 13 of its past 16 games at home.
Defenseman Luke Schenn made his Kings debut after being acquired along with Lecavalier from the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Neither has practiced with Los Angeles.
Lecavalier played 9:26 on the fourth line with Michael Mersch and Jordan Nolan.
Schenn, paired with Christian Ehrhoff, played 15:59. He took a boarding penalty in the second period that was negated after 24 seconds by Boyes' high-sticking penalty.
Toronto defenseman Roman Polak received a game misconduct for boarding Tyler Toffoli in the first. Toffoli briefly left the game.
Referee Kelly Sutherland required medical attention at the end of the first period after he was struck high by Muzzin at the boards. Sutherland returned for the second period.
