VANCOUVER -- Persistence paid off for Bo Horvat and the Vancouver Canucks' struggling power play against former teammate Eddie Lack on Wednesday.
Horvat was denied 1-on-1 by Lack three times in the first period but scored on a solo rush 7:15 into the third period and again on a power play with 1:06 seconds left to help the Canucks to a 3-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes at Rogers Arena.
Horvat, who ended a 27-game goal drought in a 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday, put the Canucks ahead by beating Victor Rask down the right wing, then cut into the middle behind the Hurricanes defense and around Lack before tucking it in on the far side.
Jordan Staal tied it for the Hurricanes with eight minutes left, but with Jaccob Slavin penalized for clearing a puck over the glass, the Canucks, who had one shot on four previous power plays, regained the lead. Horvat's one-timer from the bottom of the left faceoff circle of a pass form Linden Vey behind the net beat Lack high.
Sven Baertschi scored on a breakaway late in the second period in his return after missing two games because of a sore neck to tie it 1-1, and Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves for the Canucks (16-16-9), who are 5-2-1 in their past eight games.
Canucks right wing Jannik Hansen left the game late in the third period, struggling to get off the ice after pulling up earlier in the period trying to win a race for the puck and holding his back on the bench.
Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal scored the tying goal on a broken play with eight minutes left in the third period, and assisted on defenseman John-Michael Liles' shorthanded goal.
Carolina (16-18-7) failed to get a point for the second time in eight games.
Lack made 18 saves in his first game against the Canucks since being traded to the Hurricanes at the 2015 NHL Draft for a third-round pick in 2015 and a seventh-round pick in 2016.
