MONTREAL -- Max Pacioretty scored on a power play with one minute left in the first period, Torrey Mitchell scored a shorthanded goal with 1:33 left in the second, and the Montreal Canadiens held on for a 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
Mike Condon made 19 saves for Montreal (23-16-3), which played its first home game in almost three weeks. The Canadiens went 2-6-0 in eight road games since Dec. 17, including a 5-1 win against the Boston Bruins in the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1.
Adam Henrique scored 50 seconds into the third period to draw New Jersey within 2-1. Goalie Cory Schneider, who was named to the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, made 23 saves for the Devils (20-16-5), who lost 1-0 to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday to end a three-game winning streak.
Defenseman P.K. Subban was named Montreal's All-Star Game representative. He got his Canadiens-leading 27th assist on Pacioretty's 17th goal.
New Jersey's John Hynes used his coach's challenge on the play, but the referee determined that Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher did not interfere with Schneider, who was unable to stop Pacioretty's shot between his legs.
Montreal left wing Paul Byron got his fifth shorthanded point when he set up Mitchell's goal. Byron drew the puck back and held onto it to get around New Jersey defenseman Damon Severson's sliding attempt to cut off a pass.
Mitchell drove to the net and redirected Byron's feed past Schneider to increase the lead to 2-0. It was the Canadiens' eighth shorthanded goal, tying the Ottawa Senators for the NHL lead.
Henrique deflected defenseman Andy Greene's point shot past Condon.
Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec had a goal disallowed at 2:51 of the third. A video review upheld the referee's ruling that his stick made contact with the puck above the level of the crossbar.
Montreal's David Desharnais put a backhand wide of the right post on a penalty shot at 16:31 of the second period. It was given after Devils forward Jordin Tootoo directed a broken stick laying on the ice toward Desharnais while he was handling the puck along the boards.
Schneider has not allowed a goal facing four penalty shots this season.
New Jersey defenseman John Moore left at 4:21 of the first period after Schneider was nearly caught out of his net on a play that led to a scoring chance for Pacioretty. Moore sustained a lower-body injury and did not return.
Devils forward Tyler Kennedy was a late scratch because of an upper-body injury. New Jersey defenseman David Schlemko did not play because of a lower-body injury, and Mike Cammalleri, the Devils' leading scorer, missed his third straight game because of an upper-body injury.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of Canadiens great Dickie Moore prior to the game. A video tribute on the scoreboard showed highlights of the Hall of Fame left wing, who died at the age of 84 on Dec. 19.
