VANCOUVER -- Tyler Toffoli scored three goals, Anze Kopitar had four assists, and Jonathan Quick made 27 saves in the Los Angeles Kings' 5-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Monday.
Toffoli opened the scoring on a spinning wrist shot from the slot with less than five minutes left in the first period. He converted a rebound from low in the left faceoff circle 5:55 into the third period and deflected a point shot from the slot on a power play with 7:04 left for his Kings-leading 17 th goal and the second hat trick of his NHL career.
It was Quick's third shutout this season and the 40th of his NHL career, tying him with John Vanbiesbrouck and Frank Brimsek for most by an American-born goalie.
Playing without leading scorer Jeff Carter, who was injured Saturday, the Kings got second-period goals from defensemen Derek Forbort and Brayden McNabb to open up a 3-0 lead. Forbort scored his first NHL goal in his 11th game 1:57 into the period, and McNabb scored his second goal of the season with 8:03 left in the period.
The Kings (22-11-2) have won the first two of their four-game road trip to extend their lead atop the Pacific Division.
Quick wasn't tested often by the Canucks, who were shut out for the fourth time in their past 11 games. His best save came on a Bo Horvat shot from the slot midway through the second period.
Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves in his third straight start with No.1 goalie Ryan Miller injured.
The Canucks (14-15-9) failed in their bid to win three straight for the first time this season.
It may be a costly loss for the Canucks; forward Sven Baertschi, who had three goals and an assist in his past four games, left with an upper-body injury in the second period.
After a spirited start that included a big hit by McNabb on Canucks captain Henrik Sedin and some big saves from Markstrom, Toffoli opened the scoring with 4:27 left in the first period.
Milan Lucic's centering pass out of the corner deflected off Kopitar's stick right to Toffoli at the top left hash mark, and he spun around for a quick shot that deflected off a defender's stick and beat Markstrom high on the glove side.
Markstrom kept it close with 15 saves in the first period. He got left to right quickly to rob Forbort on a rebound off his pad, then got some help when defenseman Alexander Edler stopped Andy Andreoff's attempt on the ensuing rebound from the other side before the goalie could get back.
Quick got some help from defenseman Jake Muzzin to tie up Baertschi's stick with an empty net on a Vancouver power play early in the second period, and Forbort doubled the lead on a double deflection a short time later. After Dustin Brown forced a turnover on the forecheck, Forbort collected a loose puck at the point, and his shot bounced off two Canucks defenders and past the glove of a helpless Markstrom.
Markstrom kept it close with a great save on a 2-on-1 shot by Tanner Pearson with 8:06 left in the second period, but Kopitar won the ensuing faceoff back to McNabb for a slap shot through traffic that eluded the goaltender on the glove side.
