RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jeff Skinner scored his second goal at 12:28 of the third period, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at PNC Arena on Saturday.
Skinner knocked in the rebound of Brett Pesce's shot from mid-air to give Carolina its first lead of the night, 3-2, with a power-play goal in the third period.
The Canadiens had a power play with 3:13 remaining, but did not manage a shot on goal.
Cam Ward made 36 saves for the Hurricanes (9-13-4), who ended a three-game losing streak.
Mike Condon stopped 26 shots for the Canadiens (19-6-3).
Montreal forward Daniel Carr scored his first NHL goal on his first shift. Carr gathered the puck at the left post, circled the net and stuffed a shot past Ward's left skate at 2:44 for a 1-0 lead in the first period. Carr, a second-year pro, was recalled from St. John's of the American Hockey League on Nov. 29.
Carolina tied the game on a goal from Skinner at 13:15. Jordan Staal lugged the puck around the net and passed to Skinner, who drew Condon across on the backhand before lifting a forehand to the top of the net. The goal occurred in the final second of the power play.
Sven Andrighetto put Montreal up 2-1 at 11:19 of the second. Alex Galchenyuk won a faceoff back to Jeff Petry, who carried the puck down to the goal line before centering for Andrighetto alone in front of Ward.
The Hurricanes quickly made it 2-2 on Joakim Nordstrom's first goal of the season at 13:15. He converted a rebound after Condon stopped Andrej Nestrasil's backhand from the high slot. The goals was Nordstrom's first in 64 games.
Each team had one power-play opportunity in the second, and relied on key saves from their goaltenders. Ward's best was a glove save on P.K. Subban from the point. Condon got square to an Elias Lindholm shot from between the circles.
The Hurricanes appeared to take a 3-2 lead 16 seconds into the third when Eric Staal tumbled over Condon following his own rebound. But after a coach's challenge, the referee determined that Staal interfered with the goaltender before the puck crossed the goal line.
