GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. - Ottawa skip Rachel Homan defeated Winnipeg's Kristy McDonald 8-4 on Thursday to remain unbeaten at the Canada Cup.
Homan scored a pair in the sixth end and added a steal of one in the seventh for the victory at Revolution Place. She was the lone women's skip at 3-0.
Emma Miskew, who plays third on the Homan rink, said they still have room for improvement.
"We're still learning the ice and learning how to throw to make shots here," she said. "All the teams are really good and we really can't let up. We have to stay tough and keep trying to make all of our shots."
In other early action, Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., dropped an 8-4 decision to defending champ Val Sweeting of Edmonton. Both rinks were at 2-1.
Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones posted a 9-4 win over Tracy Fleury of Sudbury, Ont., to improve to 1-2. Fleury fell to 0-3.
In men's play, Calgary's Kevin Koe beat Saskatoon's Steve Laycock 8-6 to improve to 3-0. Mike McEwen topped fellow Winnipeg skip Reid Carruthers 9-4 in the other early game.
McEwen was 2-1 while Carruthers fell to 1-2. Two more draws were scheduled for later Thursday.
The finals are scheduled for Sunday. The winners will receive berths in the Olympic trials for the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.
