Season series: The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars in each game last season with a 5-3 win at home and 4-0 victory two weeks later. Nazem Kadri led the Maple Leafs with two goals and three assists. Alex Goligoski had two assists for the Stars.
Stars team scope: Dallas has won eight of its past nine games and begins a four-game road trip. The Stars had an extra roster spot so forward Devin Shore was recalled from Texas of the American Hockey League and could play Monday. Shore has eight goals in nine games with Texas this season. The Stars' 9-2-0 record matches the best start in franchise history set in 1996-97 and equaled in 2006-07. Dallas has outscored opponents 13-9 in the third period this season. "We've got a lot more confidence going into the third this year," defenseman Jason Demers said Saturday following a 5-3 win against the San Jose Sharks. "We feel we are more resilient with the guys we've added this year, [Antti] Niemi, Johnny [Oduya] and [Patrick] Sharp. They bring that calmness and experience. We've done a great job in third periods."
Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto began a four-game home stand by extending its losing streak to six games with a 4-0 defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. The last time the Maple Leafs started their season at 1-7-2 was in 2009-10, when they finished 29th overall. Toronto has surrendered the first goal in nine of its 10 games. "There were three games that I felt were un-Leaf like and have to be way better than that," coach Mike Babcock said Saturday. "We have to fix it. You don't have to blame any players...I'm responsible." Toronto's power-play unit has gone 2-for-27, hasn't scored in its past 18 opportunities and has yielded two shorthanded goals during that stretch.
