{allcanada} Quick start, Gibson help Ducks defeat Canucks

ANAHEIM -- Shawn Horcoff, Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg and Corey Perry scored and John Gibson earned his third career shutout in the Anaheim Ducks' 4-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center on Monday.

Gibson, who had a shutout against the Canucks in his NHL debut on April 7, 2014, made 25 saves.

Horcoff scored 1:19 into the game on a shot from the right circle.

Anaheim (9-11-5) went up 2-0 at 19:57 in the first period on Rakell's power-play goal. Canucks goalie Ryan Miller was forced out the net on a scramble and Rakell scored off a rebound from a shot by Ryan Getzlaf.

Rakell has six goals this season; Perry leads the Ducks with eight.

Nick Ritchie's first NHL point came when he assisted on Silfverberg's goal one minute into the third period. Ritchie nearly had his first NHL goal minutes later but was denied on a breakaway.

But Perry scored on a breakaway at 8:39 after Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis turned the puck over in the neutral zone. Perry's goal gave Anaheim a 4-0 lead.

Miller was then removed from the game in favor of Jacob Markstrom. Miller finished with 25 saves.

The Canucks' (9-9-7) streak of eight straight games with a power-play goal ended.

Vancouver right wing Jake Virtanen left the game at 14:02 of the first period after taking a hit from Josh Manson. He did not return.

{allcanada} Maple Leafs' Sparks shuts out Oilers in NHL debut

TORONTO -- Garret Sparks made 24 saves to become the 25th goalie to earn a shutout in his NHL debut and help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-0 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Air Canada Centre on Monday.

Leo Komarov scored two goals for Toronto (8-11-5), which ended a three-game losing streak (0-2-1).

Sparks was called up from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Saturday to replace James Reimer, who has a lower-body injury.

After Jonathan Bernier slipped to 0-8-1 in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday, Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock decided to turn the net over the Sparks.

Sparks is the seventh goalie to debut in the NHL with a shutout since 2000.

Edmonton outshot Toronto 8-3 in the opening period, but the Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead on Komarov's first of the night at 6:45 with Oilers center Leon Draisaitl in the penalty box for hooking. Komarov converted a nifty three-way passing play from in tight to establish a new NHL career high with his ninth goal.

The Maple Leafs turned the tables on the Oilers in the second period, outshooting them 13-8, but it was Edmonton that had the two best scoring chances. Defenseman Justin Schultz took a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that beat Sparks but hit the post at 7:08. Then seven minutes later, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins hit the post with a shot from the high slot.

The Maple Leafs, who were shorthanded for the first 1:02 of the third period, were unable to add to their lead on either of two 2-on-1 opportunities in the first 1:15 of the period.

Toronto did make it 2-0 at 7:33 when Nazem Kadri tipped a Jake Gardiner snap shot from the left point past Anders Nilsson from the high slot for his third goal. Video review confirmed the ruling on the ice Kadri's stick was below the crossbar when it contacted the puck.

Komarov completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining.

The Maple Leafs begin a three-game road trip at the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday.

The Oilers (8-15-2) went 1-3-1 on their five-game road trip.

STARS (19-5-0) at FLAMES (8-14-2)

TV: FS-SW+, SNW

Season series: The Dallas Stars won two of three games against the Calgary Flames last season, with each victory coming in Calgary. Jamie Benn led the Stars with two goals and five points. Johnny Gaudreau led the Flames with two goals and an assist.

Stars team scope: This is the second of a four-game trip for Dallas, which has the best road record in the NHL (10-2-0). "We're comfortable on the road," Benn told the Stars website. "We really do play a simple game. Sometimes, when we are at home, we try to do too much. It seems like when we're on the road, we keep it simple, and that's what makes us successful." Goalie Antti Niemi likely will make his fifth straight start with Kari Lehtonen on injured reserve because of an upper-body injury. Coach Lindy Ruff expects Lehtonen to return later this week. Lehtonen, who was injured while playing in relief of Niemi in a 7-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators last Tuesday, fully participated in the past two practices, Ruff said. Ruff was pleased with the play of defenseman Patrik Nemeth in the Stars' come-from-behind 4-3 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, his first game since Nov. 2. Nemeth, 23, was recalled Thursday after a conditioning stint with Texas of the American Hockey League. "I thought he played well," Ruff said. "He looked a little bit refreshed. I use the term 'lighter.' He looked lighter to me. He moved more efficient. I thought it was a good game for him."

Flames team scope: Gaudreau missed practice Monday because of the flu, and Sean Monahan left practice early because he was feeling ill. Defenseman Kris Russell and forward Michael Frolik were absent for a maintenance day. Goalie Karri Ramo will make his 13th start in the past 14 games, coach Bob Hartley told the Flames website. Calgary returns home after going 0-2-1 on a three-game road trip against the Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks, its lone point coming from an overtime loss to the Coyotes on Friday. The Flames, who entered Monday tied for 29th in the League standings, begin a five-game homestand. "We know what we have to do," captain Mark Giordano said. "We know where we are as far as standings go. We have to focus on our homestand now. We have a homestand here that if we can pick up some points, it'll go a long way."

{allcanada} FLYERS (9-10-5) at SENATORS (12-6-5)

FLYERS (9-10-5) at SENATORS (12-6-5)

TV: TCN-PH, RDS2, TSN5

Season series: Craig Anderson made 36 saves, and Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist, to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 21 at Canadian Tire Centre. Mika Zibanejad, Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris also scored for the Senators. Flyers goalie Steve Mason made 27 saves.

Flyers team scope: Right wing Jakub Voracek has one goal and 12 assists in 24 games in the first two months of the season; at the same time last season he had nine goals and 23 assists in 23 games. The scoring slump forced coach Dave Hakstol to separate Voracek from Claude Giroux on the top line. Since joining center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and left wing Chris VandeVelde, the Flyers have won three of four games, so Voracek has put his scoring woes behind him for now. "We haven't been scoring and [Hakstol] changed it up and we won three out of four," Voracek told the Courier-Post. "There is no reason to change it [back]. I know what kind of player I am. I feel like I'm coming around." Voracek has four points in his past four games and leads the Flyers with 12 assists. Defenseman Nick Schultz, who sustained an upper-body injury Saturday against the New York Rangers, practiced Monday and could play Tuesday.

Senators team scope: Anderson will make his eighth straight start Tuesday and 19th in 23 games. Anderson is 34 but coach Dave Cameron said Monday he isn't worried about wearing out his goaltender. "We'll monitor his play," Cameron told the Senators website. "I think your goalie is like everyone else; they never complain when they play. It's up to us to monitor, making sure that first and foremost we're playing good away from the puck so we're not hanging him out to dry with multiple shots and opportunities and teams crashing the net. That's the first thing we have to do. Then we go game by game." The Senators finished November 7-2-3 and they want to build on that heading into December. "You look at November as hopefully a huge stepping stone for us," forward Bobby Ryan said. "Obviously the scoreboard reflects where we're headed and what we think we've accomplished so far. It was a positive month."

BLUE JACKETS (10-15-0) at CANADIENS (18-4-3)

TV: RDS, SNE, FS-O

Season series: Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty scored five goals against the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, including three game-winners. Montreal outscored Columbus 11-5 during the three-game sweep that included a 3-1 win at Bell Centre on Feb. 21. Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov had a goal and four assists, and his partner, P.K. Subban, had two goals and two assists. Blue Jackets forwards Nick Foligno and Marko Dano, now playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, each had a goal and an assist against Montreal.

Blue Jackets team scope: Center Brandon Dubinsky will return to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for his cross-check to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby on Friday. Coach John Tortorella put an emphasis on skating at practice Monday. "You can tell even by the way we practiced that he wants us in better shape, so we're not fading at the end of games," forward Scott Hartnell told the Columbus Dispatch. Right wing David Clarkson skated Monday for the first time since he injured his lower back on Nov. 3. Clarkson, who took to the ice on his own, will skate again Tuesday and may be ready to rejoin his teammates later in the week. Defenseman Fedor Tyutin remains out with a broken nose, and right wing Markus Hannikainen will miss two months because of a shoulder injury he sustained during his NHL debut in the Blue Jackets' 3-1 loss at the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

Canadiens team scope: Montreal will be without goalie Carey Price for at least six weeks because of a lower-body injury that will not require surgery. Price has missed 10 games, including the past two since he aggravated his original injury during the Canadiens' 5-1 win at the New York Rangers last Wednesday. "When you lose a key player it's always going to have side effects, it's going to hurt your team, but I believe in our players' character to step up and weather the storm," general manager Marc Bergevin said. Rookie goalie Mike Condon will make his third straight start against Columbus. Goalie Zachary Fucale was recalled from St. John's of the American Hockey League on Monday and will back up Condon in place of Dustin Tokarski, who was reassigned to the AHL. Forwards Daniel Carr and Michael Bournival practiced Monday. Carr was recalled from St. John's on Sunday and Bournival has been sidelined since last season because of concussion-like symptoms.

{allcanada} Ducks' Kesler: 'We're going to make the playoffs'; CANUCKS (9-8-7) at DUCKS (8-11-5)

CANUCKS (9-8-7) at DUCKS (8-11-5)

TV: SNP, FS-W

ANAHEIM -- Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Kesler remains confident his team will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"This team is too good not to be in the playoffs," Kesler said. "We played deep into the playoffs last year. And to be honest maybe some guys weren't ready to start the season. We've found our game and it's coming. There's still a lot of hockey left to play and we're ready for the challenge."

The Ducks went into their game Monday against the Vancouver Canucks five points behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card in the Western Conference. But they're 7-4-3 so far in November after going 1-7-2 in October.

Getting some offense has helped. Kesler had one goal in his first 21 games but has two goals in his past three. However Corey Perry has two goals in his past seven and Ryan Getzlaf has one goal in 20 games this season. The Ducks enter the week 29th in scoring at 1.92 goals per game.

But Kesler remains confident things will turn around.

"I'm too old to worry anymore," he said. "Nothing really worries me. We're going to have fun. We're going to enjoy this challenge. And we're going to make the playoffs."

Both the Ducks and the Canucks have struggled to find consistency this season. The Ducks are four points behind the Canucks in the Pacific Division and both teams feel that they have underachieved to some degree this season. They would like to get on a roll in order to create some separation in the standings.

"I didn't see it quite this way. I thought there would be a few more wins in the division as a whole," Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. "There's been some slow starts in the division that I didn't see. But I think these teams are going to get on track. You've got to get on track and kind of gain momentum as you go."

Ducks goalie John Gibson will make his third straight start Monday. Goalie Frederik Andersen practiced but still is recovering from the flu.

"He was pretty sick for about six days there," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "He's feeling a little bit stronger but he's not 100 percent. The more practice time he can get in and the longer he can stay out there, the faster he's going to get back and get better."

Desjardins would not name a starting goalie but Ryan Miller was the first goaltender off the ice after the Canucks' optional morning skate.

Here are the projected lineups:

CANUCKS

Daniel Sedin - Henrik Sedin - Jannik Hansen

Jake Virtanen - Bo Horvat - Alexandre Burrows

Chris Higgins - Jared McCann - Radim Vrbata

Brandon Prust - Adam Cracknell - Derek Dorsett

Alexander Edler - Christopher Tanev

Dan Hamhuis - Yannick Weber

Luca Sbisa - Matt Bartkowski

Ryan Miller

Jacob Markstrom

Injured: Brandon Sutter (undisclosed), Ben Hutton (lower-body)

Scratched: Sven Baertschi, Jared McCann, Andrey Pedan

DUCKS

Rickard Rakell - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry

Nick Ritchie - Ryan Kesler - Jakob Silfverberg

Carl Hagelin - Shawn Horcoff - Andrew Cogliano

Patrick Maroon - Mike Santorelli - Chris Stewart

Cam Fowler - Kevin Bieksa

Hampus Lindholm - Josh Manson

Sami Vatanen - Clayton Stoner

John Gibson

Anton Khudobin

Injured: Nate Thompson (shoulder), Jiri Sekac (ankle), Simon Despres (concussion symptoms)

Scratched: Shea Theodore, Frederik Andersen

Status Report: Anaheim recalled Theodore from San Diego of the American Hockey League and Thompson returned from a conditioning assignment with San Diego on Sunday. Theodore is considered Anaheim's top defense prospect. He had been called up for a two-day stint Nov. 17-18, but has yet to appear in an NHL game. … Sekac practiced for the first time Monday since getting hurt Nov. 1. He said he is getting closer to returning but has not yet been cleared for contact drills. … Pedan has been with the Canucks since Nov. 23 but is expected to sit out his third straight game.

Who's Hot: The Sedins have combined for 12 goals and 30 points in the past nine games. Daniel has points in seven straight games, and Henrik has points in his past six games. … Getzlaf has 35 points in 39 games against the Canucks. Perry has 14 goals and 34 points in 38 games.

{allcanada} Former players, CTV's W5 petition court to unseal secret NHL emails

When Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke effectively ended the career of Boston Bruins centre Marc Savard with a crushing blindside hit to the head, the blow sent shudders through the hockey world.

It also sent Colin Campbell, then the NHL's senior vice-president of operations, to his computer, where he exchanged emails about the incident with Mike Milbury, a former NHL player, coach and general manager turned TV analyst.

Milbury asked Campbell, "Is intent to injure a stand alone call?"

As part of his reply, sent six days after the incident in a March 13, 2010, email, Campbell wrote: "Let's face it Mike... we sell rivalries, we sell and promote hate..."

Campbell's charged answer is part of the public record in U.S. federal court in Minnesota as the result of a legal action launched by a group of more than 100 former NHL players, including Joe Murphy, Bernie Nicholls and Gary Leeman.

Embedded Image

They are suing the NHL, alleging league and team officials knew or ought to have known about the links between head trauma and long-term cognitive problems but failed to act to protect players – all the while profiting from the violence of hockey.

The league says players could have put "two and two together" and done their own research about the long-term effects of repeated concussions.

The Milbury-Campbell exchange and thousands of others are now at the centre of a high-stakes battle over whether the media and the public have a right to know what NHL executives said and did behind the scenes about violence in the game and player head injuries.

So far, the NHL has turned over more than 2.5 million pages of internal league documents in the case. The vast majority of those documents, however, are sealed by a court order at the NHL's request.

But on Tuesday in Minnesota, a judge is scheduled to hear from lawyers for the former players and CTV's W5 that the public has a right to review an initial batch of 61 documents, most of which have been completely hidden from public view.

It's unclear when the U.S. federal court judge will rule on the former players' and CTV's court motion.

Some of the documents include emails that have been partially redacted by the NHL, such as the one Campbell sent to Milbury in which he wrote that the league "sell(s) and promote(s) hate." The emails referenced here are from documents that are now part of the public record.

The NHL says in court filings that it wants to keep the documents secret to protect its trade secrets and to protect some of its officials from embarrassment.

The league says lawyers for the former players are simply trying to stoke a "media firestorm" and "spin documents" to influence the "court of public opinion" and recruit additional retired NHL players to file lawsuits.

Neither NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly nor league executive vice-president of communications Gary Meagher responded to an email seeking comment on the potential unsealing of documents in the case.

The emails that are partially redacted include correspondence between league officials and doctors, team executives, trainers and members of the media. Some of the emails will be used by lawyers for the former players suing the NHL to show the mindset of league executives, particularly those in charge of establishing on-ice rules and overseeing player discipline.

In October of 2006, after Jonathan Cheechoo, then with the San Jose Sharks, collided with Vancouver's Lukas Krajicek in a game, NHL executive Mike Murphy, a former player and coach, emailed Campbell after an NHL team official, whose name has been redacted, complained about the hit.

Embedded Image

"I think about when we played...head shots? That was life in the League," Murphy wrote. "You stood up for yourselve [sic] and your coach and GM told you to have some balls or go home!...I must be getting too old..."

In March, 2007, after former NHL player Todd Fedoruk said in an interview with The Canadian Press that tough guys should wear padding on their hands under their hockey gloves, NHL public relations staffer Frank Brown emailed the story to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Daly and Campbell.

Campbell's emailed reply has been completely redacted, hidden from public view.

A month later, in April, 2007, Brian Burke, then the general manager of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, emailed NHL senior manager of hockey operations Kris King.

Burke wrote to remark on a public comment from a team official – both the official's name and club have been redacted – about Derek Boogaard, a tough guy who then played for the Minnesota Wild and later died of an accidental drug and alcohol overdose in 2011.

In Game 2 of the Ducks playoff series against the Wild on April 13, 2007, Boogaard hit Anaheim defenceman Kent Huskins with a knee-on-knee blow and was given a two-minute minor for tripping.

Embedded Image

"Are you f------ kidding me?" Burke wrote King. "We are waiting to hear if he [Boogaard] is getting bounced. And we certainly expect a fine so you stop this before he cripples somebody. Shall I start whining to the media as well? This will get out of hand if something isn't done."

King forwarded the email to Campbell.

"Burkie is up 2 [games in the series] and starting to play the game," King wrote. "He worries about Boogaard and maybe so. The calls he [Boogaard] has got are right and deserved."

King wrote that a player, whose name has been redacted by the NHL, "won't fight when challenged. Any thoughts? Or just Brian being Brian."

In December, 2008, TSN journalist Bob McKenzie forwarded a story to the NHL's Campbell about Don Sanderson, a 21-year-old amateur player with the Ontario Hockey Association's Whitby Dunlops who was hospitalized in Brantford, Ont., after losing his helmet and hitting his head on the ice during a fight.

Embedded Image

"Well, the prognosis on this kid isn't good," McKenzie wrote. "Sounds like he might not make it. If it happened in the NHL, what do you think the fallout would be? Hockey player dies or is brain dead as a result of a fight, hitting his head on the ice. It's the game's worst nightmare."

The first section of Campbell's reply is redacted. He then writes: "It is certainly scary... stand back a [sic] try and knock the guy out so he falls down on something as hard as concrete... and to think they throw off their helmets lots of times!!!! I guess if I had real balls I would go public and go hard but I won't."

Sanderson died three weeks after sustaining the injury.

Three years later, in 2011, two weeks before the NHL passed a new protocol calling for concussed players to be removed from games and sent to a "quiet room," former NHL referee Kerry Fraser sent out a mass email about a headshot New York Rangers' forward Derek Stepan delivered on Washington Capitals' defenceman Mike Green.

Fraser wrote about how he had appeared on TSN and questioned whether a suspension for Stepan was more appropriate than a fine.

Ruben Echemendia, a doctor who chairs the NHL/NHLPA Concussion Working Group, sent Fraser's email to Daly, who forwarded it to Bettman and another league lawyer.

"I'm not sure there is anything we can or should be doing, but I wanted you to be aware," Daly wrote in a March 1, 2011 email.

Bettman's entire response is redacted, as is Daly's subsequent reply.

Later in the email correspondence, Daly wrote of Fraser: "He's not the only person who thinks we should be penalizing head shots more severely than we do."

"That's not the issue. His disparaging campaign is," Bettman wrote.

In January, 2012, Meagher emailed Bettman and others a Toronto Star column quoting then-Toronto Maple Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke, after Burke had complained about the rise in the number of NHL discipline hearings being conducted by Brendan Shanahan, who had succeeded Campbell as the league's chief disciplinarian.

"Brian speaking out on his view on the state of the game (fighting) today major story north of the 49th today..." Meagher wrote to Bettman, Campbell and other league executives.

Campbell replied the same day, and brought up the health of Toronto Maple Leafs' forward Colton Orr.

"Burkie missing point," Campbell emailed. "Colton Orr either knocks out opponent OR gets knocked out. We figure he has had at least 3 concussions in the last year (even though NONE are recorded)."

The remainder of Campbell's email is redacted.

Bettman then emailed Campbell and others.

"We haven't changed the rules on fighting," Bettman wrote. "What Brendan is doing has nothing to do with fighting. Hitting is only slightly down and those are the hits we don't want. Half the world wants fighting eliminated and the other half wants more... I'd say it's insane!"

The rest of the commissioner's email is redacted.

Because of the widespread redactions in the documents, it's impossible to determine the significance of some of the exchanges. For example, in May, 2013, Gerry Townend, the head athletic therapist with the Ottawa Senators, emailed Echemendia, the head of the NHL's Concussion Working Group.

Townend's entire email is redacted.

Echemendia forwarded Townend's email a day later to NHL deputy counsel Julie Grand, and she sent it to six senior NHL executives.

"Attached is an email from Ottawa's trainer – who is a trainer rep on the CWG [Concussion Working Group] – expressing the views of his fellow trainers," Grand wrote. "We will tailor our presentation to the Trainers in Vegas to address these issues."

Campbell's entire email reply is redacted.

{allcanada} Maple Leafs' Sparks to make NHL debut vs. Oilers

OILERS (8-14-2) at MAPLE LEAFS (7-11-5)

TV: TVA Sports, SN

TORONTO -- Garret Sparks will make his NHL debut in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs when they host the Edmonton Oilers at Air Canada Centre on Monday.

Sparks, 22, was recalled from Toronto of the American Hockey League on Saturday to replace an injured James Reimer in the lineup. He was the backup to Jonathan Bernier as Toronto lost 4-2 to the Washington Capitals.

Sparks is 8-2-1 with a 1.90 goals-against average, .938 save percentage and two shutouts in 11 games. His save percentage is second in the AHL and his GAA is fourth.

"I'm excited," said Sparks, a seventh-round pick (No. 190) at the 2011 NHL Draft. He has split the past two seasons between Toronto of the AHL and Orlando of the ECHL. He was the AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 8. "I have been playing hockey for a long time and this is the coolest thing that has come of it yet so I am very excited. I'm just trying to stay composed so I can play my game tonight and do the things that got me here."

This time a year ago Sparks said he was playing for Orlando and said he did not envision playing in the NHL.

"Those are the kind of thoughts you have to block out," he said. "You just do your job every day and see where it takes you."

Sparks said he believes he is a better goalie for having experienced the ups and downs of playing in the minor leagues.

"I like to think I am a more well-rounded, better version of myself," he said.

Toronto coach Mike Babcock said his expectations of a goaltender making his NHL debut are no different than what he would expect from any other goalie.

"He's got an opportunity like lots of kids have had before him and it's up to him to grab it," Babcock said. "He's got the [second-best] save percentage in the AHL and he's winning all the time down there. Obviously we're in need of some saves and we'll have to play well in front of him for sure. But it's an opportunity for him."

The Maple Leafs have lost three straight (0-2-1) while the Oilers are coming off a 3-2 shootout win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. Monday is the final game of their five-game road trip; they're 1-2-1 so far on the trip.

Oilers coach Todd McLellan said a victory against the Maple Leafs would help raise the spirits of his players.

"It would put a win in the win column which is obviously important and a goal of ours every night," McLellan said. "But to come home .500 on a pretty tough road trip considering we didn't win the first two games would be an accomplishment we'd be pleased with. We wouldn't have a parade but we'd be pleased. I think it is something we can grow on."

McLellan said he has been pleased with his players' effort during the trip.

"We have played some really good games," McLellan said. "We just haven't had a timely goal or a timely prevent of a goal to get us more wins than losses. We have to identify what is the root cause of the one-goal loss. You don't find the same pattern game to game, but over time you do."

Here are the projected lineups:
