Season series: The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings were 2-1-1 in their four games last season, with each team winning once at home and once on the road. Ottawa forward Clarke MacArthur and Detroit forward Gustav Nyquist each scored three goals.

Senators team scope: Ottawa is without forwards MacArthur (concussion), Mike Hoffman (lower-body injury) and Curtis Lazar (concussion), but Hoffman is close to returning. Hoffman, who has four goals and eight points in seven games, might play in the back end of this home-and-home Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre. "It's just a day-to-day situation right now," Hoffman told the Ottawa Sun on Wednesday. The Senators look to win their second straight following an 0-2-2 stretch. Coach Dave Cameron did not name a starting goalie after practice Thursday, but said Andrew Hammond would start one of the games against the Red Wings.

Red Wings team scope: Coach Jeff Blashill is searching for more offense with Detroit 1-4-1 in the past six games and averaging 1.83 goals during that span. He juggled his forward lines at practice Thursday. Darren Helm returned to center of the third line, Luke Glendening switched back to center of the fourth line and rookie Dylan Larkin is no longer centering the second line. Larkin returned to right wing on the top line. Goalie Jimmy Howard will start Friday and Petr Mrazek will start Saturday. "We think we got better in us," Blashill said, according to Mlive.com. "Part of my job as a coach is to try to find the best combinations to put the guys in the best chance to be successful."
