As Jim Carrey tries to cope with the pain of losing his on-and-off girlfriend, Cathriona White, to an apparent suicide, the actor is focusing on supporting her family.

"Jim is doing everything he can to help," a source tells PEOPLE. "He is devastated, but can't imagine how her family must feel."

White's stepmother and sister arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday to make arrangements to bring her body back home to her native Ireland – and Carrey is doing whatever he can to assist the family while they are stateside.

"Jim arranged for his driver to pick up Cathriona's family from LAX. Her family has access to his car during this awful visit to L.A.," says the source, adding that the actor is "helping out financially as well."

Carrey has also been seen meeting with White's family. On Wednesday, he spoke with White's sister, Lisa, at his L.A. home, and was photographed arriving at White's house late Thursday night.

"Jim visited Cathriona's house last night to help her sister Lisa," explains the source, who says this isn't the first time the actor has met White's family.

"Jim has spent time with Lisa in the past during her Los Angeles visits," says the source. "He feels it's his obligation to do whatever he can to help Lisa."

Despite the painful circumstances and Carrey's on-and-off relationship with White, the source says the family has no hard feelings for the star – they are simply searching for answers as to what could have happened.

"They are all just shocked," says the source. "No one [from her family] is putting any blame on Jim."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says an autopsy to determine White's cause of death is scheduled for Friday afternoon. However, Winter said there were indications at the scene of a suicide.

Winter revealed to PEOPLE that not only was a suicide note found containing Carrey's name, but that there were multiple notes – and one was addressed to Carrey.

"There were several notes found," Winter said. And while he doesn't know the exact contents of the letters, "There was a note [addressed] to Mr. Carrey."

Along with the suicide notes, pills were also located near her body when she was pronounced dead on Monday night.
