The Ottawa Senators suspended defense prospect Mikael Wikstrand on Friday, Senators general manager Bryan Murray said.
Murray said Wikstrand, 22, returned to his native Sweden on Thursday.
"He's suspended from playing hockey other than for our organization," Murray said.
Wikstrand, a seventh-round pick (No. 196) in the 2012 NHL Draft, had signed an entry-level contract with the Senators on May 2, 2014 and was allowed to play the 2014-15 season with Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League, where he had five goals and 20 points in 46 games.
Murray said he expected Wikstrand, a 6-foot-1, 212-pound left-shot defender, to start this season as one of the top defensemen with Binghamton in the American Hockey League and potentially be a recall option during the 2015-16 season.
Despite Wikstrand's departure, Murray said he remains a prospect the Senators are high on.
"We thought that he'd be one of our top couple guys to start the year in Binghamton and go from there," Murray said. "A big guy that sees the ice, has a good head for the game, has to be a prospect and has a real chance to play here."
