FRASERVILLE, Ont. – Scott Steckly may have not performed quite to his liking in the day's two practice sessions, but he's well positioned for the drop of the green this evening in his attempt to attain a fourth NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 championship.
Steckly, of Milverton, Ontario, powered his No. 22 Canadian Tire Dodge to the Pinty's 250 pole in track record time Saturday afternoon at Kawartha Speedway after he finished 12th and second in the practices. With a nine-point lead on his closest challengers Jason Hathaway and Andrew Ranger, Steckly will now start with the added advantage of inside front row.
Steckly recorded a fast lap of 17.666 seconds (76.418 mph) around the .375-mile oval near Peterborough. The previous record was established by Mark Dilley in the series' inaugural event at the facility in 2007 at 17.704 (76.254).
It also marked the 17th pole of Steckly's career, which ties him with Ranger for the series' all-time lead.
Hathaway will line up outside Row 2 as he qualified fourth at 17.771 (75.966) while Ranger came in 10th at 17.898 (75.427). L.P. Dumoulin, who enters the finale 23 points behind Steckly, qualified fifth at 17.806 (75.817).
Rookie Cayden Lapcevich will start outside row of Steckly thanks to his qualifying run of 17.706 (76.245). Gary Klutt, Hathaway, Dumoulin, Dilley, Joey McColm, D.J. Kennington, Alex Tagliani and Ranger rounded out the top 10.
The Pinty's 250 is scheduled for green flag at 5 p.m., however, heavy rains moved over the speedway at the conclusion of qualifying. The race start is now subject to change.
