{allcanada} Ex-Oiler Roy lands a tryout in Washington

The season of the PTO continues.

Veteran centre Derek Roy, most recently seen in an Edmonton Oilers uniform, has agreed to a professional tryout offer with the Washington Capitals.

Roy, 32, has spent the last two seasons on one-year deals, and saw his salary plummet to $1 million in 2014-15. In 72 games spent with the Oilers and Nashville Predators, the forward put up 32 points.

In his prime, the Ottawa native ripped off four straight 20-goal seasons in Buffalo (2006-10) but his production began to fall off after suffering a leg injury.

Now viewed as a bottom-six centre, Roy has registered 524 points over 738 career games with six different clubs.

With centre Eric Fehr (Pittsburgh) leaving in free agency and No. 1 pivot Nicklas Backstrom (hip) questionable for opening night, there is an opportunity for Roy to squeeze into the roster on a cheap, one-year deal.

Roy joins a slew of unrestricted free agents looking to hang on in the NHL via tryout. It's a long list that includes Scott Gomez, Sergei Gonchar, Scottie Upshall, Brad Boyes, Curtis Glencross, Tomas Fleischmann, Martin Havlat and several others.
