{allcanada} Matthew Perry working to help others overcome addiction

Matthew Perry has achieved a lot in his career, but what makes him most proud is the help he can give to fellow addicts.

Knowing just how hard it is to get over substance abuse issues, the former "Friends" star, 46, talked about the importance of giving back in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades," he told the magazine, "but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, 'Will you help me stop drinking?' I will say, 'Yes. I know how to do that.'"

The actor, who recently received the 2015 Phoenix Rising Award from the wide-reaching nonprofit drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization Phoenix House, also realizes the responsibility he has a celebrity to speak about substance abuse.

"When I was in big trouble, it was so public because I was on a TV show that 30 million people were watching," he said. "The fact that I [am] on TV makes people listen a little bit more, so I take advantage of that from time to time."
