SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Anthony Bennett poured in 16 points to lead the Canadian men's basketball team to an 80-64 win over Brazil at the Tuto Marchand Continental Cup on Monday.
Dwight Powell scored 14 points and added seven rebounds off the bench for Canada, which is undefeated through two games at the tournament. Andrew Wiggins had nine points.
Augusto Lima led Brazil with 17 points.
Canada out-rebounded Brazil 43-24 and held the Brazilians to 39 per cent shooting.
"It was definitely a tough game but defence won us the game," Bennett said. "We got out in transition and found the open guy. We were forcing passes in the first but we settled down in the half-court and made the right plays."
Brazil got off to a hot start, scoring six points in the first five minutes. But Canada pulled away late to earn an 18-11 lead after the first quarter.
Canada's bench was the difference in the second quarter with Phil Scrubb going 3 for 3 from the field, including a deep three-pointer. Canada held Brazil to 16 points in the quarter and went into halftime with a 36-27 advantage.
"It was a defensive battle in the first half so we tried to create some more in transition," said head coach Jay Triano. "In the second half, we were able to get up and down the floor a little bit better. Our depth was very good, especially offensively. We got 50 points off the bench but I was more pleased with the way the guys came off the bench and followed what the starters had done defensively."
Bennett started the third quarter with 11 straight points, Wiggins threw down a one-handed dunk over a Brazilian defender and Brady Heslip nailed a three to give Canada a 55-40 lead. Canada led 59-44 heading into the fourth.
The Canadians started the final quarter on a 14-4 run.
