{allcanada} Canadian women's basketball wins at Universiade

GWANGJU, Korea, Republic Of — Adut Bulgal had 24 points and 15 rebounds to lift the Canadian women's basketball team to a 70-65 double-overtime win over Hungary at the Summer Universiade on Sunday.

Quinn Dornstauder also had a double-double for Canada with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Korissa Williams contributed 10 points and five steals.

Canada got off to a rough start and was struggling from the field, shooting only 27 per cent in the first half of play. The game was tied 25-25 at the break.

The Canadians pressured Hungary in the second half, holding them to a 29 per cent shooting percentage from the field.

"At halftime, we asked the girls to respond with a better effort, and they responded in a large way," said head coach Fabian McKenzie. "I am very proud of them. They gutted it out the whole way, through every possession. Even when things weren't going their way, they stayed positive and battled through. Those were the keys to winning the game."

Hungary pulled ahead by four points with only minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Canada tied it late to send it to overtime and took control in the final five minutes to earn the victory.

In men's basketball, Canada improved to 2-0 with an 81-61 win over Mexico. The Canadians are tied with Russia for first place in Group B, with three preliminary games remaining.

Chris McLaughlin led the offensive efforts with 26 points, while Johnny Berhanemeskel added 16 points with three assists.

In diving, Celina Toth narrowly missed out on Canada's first medal. The Victoria native finished the 10-metre platform event in fourth place with a total of 322.55 points.

In swimming, Samantha Corea missed the podium in the 50-metre butterfly. Her time of 26.51 seconds put her in fourth place by one tenth of a second.

In soccer, the Canadian men's team dropped out of medal contention with a 1-0 loss to Taiwan in their second game of preliminary competition.

In women's volleyball, Canada improved its record to 1-1 with a 3-0 win over Zimbabwe (25-10, 25-7, 25-6).
