QUEBEC — Parti Quebecois Leader Pierre Karl Peladeau's sovereigntist fervour is upsetting National Hockey League owners and hurting Quebec City's chances of getting a team back, a prominent politician said Thursday.
Peladeau is the controlling shareholder of Quebecor Inc., (TSX:QBR.B), which has for years been trying to bring back the NHL to the provincial capital.
Quebec City's new NHL-size arena is managed by Quebecor and is called the Videotron Centre, named after the company's profitable cable company.
Francois Legault, leader of the Coalition for Quebec's Future, said NHL owners don't like the idea of a sovereigntist such as Peladeau getting a team.
"What I'm hearing in Montreal, is that as long as Peladeau (is in politics) it's going to be difficult giving him a team," Legault told reporters.
"Mr. Peladeau is a sovereigntist and we know very well the owners in Toronto and of the Montreal Canadiens aren't and they don't like Quebec independence."
The Coalition leader said last week Peladeau's stewardship of the PQ is already hurting foreign investment in Quebec.
Sam Hamad, minister responsible for the Quebec City region, concurred that economic stability is an important factor in bringing a team back to the city.
"Let's not be naive," Hamad said. "There are two important factors for investments: stability and predictability. When someone wants to invest in Quebec, as long as there is no stability, it's clear that people could ask questions."
