{allcanada} Overholt wins gold in 200 free at Canada Trials

TORONTO — Emily Overholt added to her an impressive swim season by winning gold in the women's 200-metre freestyle Wednesday at the 2015 Team Canada Trials.

The 17-year-old Overholt, from West Vancouver, clocked a personal best one minute 58.69 seconds for the victory, edging 2012 Olympian Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que. and Toronto's Kennedy Goss.

"I had a great preliminary which gave me a lot of confidence," said Overholt. "I've accumulated a lot of experience at this level over the past couple of years and my race strategy has really improved."

Overholt already possesses a bronze from the world juniors, silver from the Commonwealth Games and set three personal bests at the world short course championships this past December in Dubai.

Savard took second in 1:58.84 while Goss was third in 1:59.01.

The competition is the qualifying event for the Pan Americans Games in Toronto and the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia this summer.

Other winners in women's competition were Vancouver's Samantha Corea in the 50 butterfly, Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., in the 100 backstroke, Toronto's Martha McCabe in the 200 breaststroke and Tessa Cieplucha of Oakville, Ont., in the 1,500 freestyle.

On the men's side, Victoria's Jeremy Bagshaw posted a decisive victory in the men's 200 freestyle– clocking a personal best 1:47.48. Alec Page of Victoria was second in 1:49.20 and Vancouver's Stefan Milosevic finished third in 1:49.70.

"My preparations for this meet went very well," said Bagshaw. "I was focused and my biggest improvement has been in my stroke technique."

Other winners in men's competition were Edmonton's Kier Maitland in the 800 freestyle, Santo Condorelli in the 50 butterfly, Calgary's Russell Wood in the 100 backstroke and James Dergousoff of North Vancouver in the 200 breaststroke.
