It was one of many beloved children's songs from the Canadian group,
Her son David Lilienstein, who grew up with a very music-filled childhood, told CBC News that his mother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last October. She died at her home in Toronto Thursday, surrounded by friends and family.
"She knew it was happening, she was at peace with it, and she died very peacefully and not in pain," he told Canadian Press.
"It's kind of hard to believe," Sharon Hampson told CP of Lilienstein's death. "We fought like sisters but we loved each other like sisters, too." Hampson described Lilienstein as "a woman of many ideas" who "would do anything" for her audience and was never concerned about being embarrassed while performing.
Born in Chicago in 1936, Lilienstein formed the group with Hampson and Bramwell (Bram) Morrison in Toronto in 1978. They rose to fame with The Elephant Show that aired on CBC-TV and on
The trio also starred in many national TV specials and made more than 20 recordings.
Morrison said Lilienstein was "absolutely vivacious, creative, full of ideas and energy." He added, "It's a shock. We've been together for 37 years — it's like a marriage."
