Jim Popp believes there is a decent chance Michael Sam is in Montreal Alouettes training camp come May.
The Alouettes GM told the Montreal Gazette he thinks he thinks the team has a 50/50 chance of signing Sam - the first openly gay professional football player.
"His agent knows. They're ready. They know this (CFL) may be what it is," Popp told the Gazette. "It's Michael who has to make the decision — and he might never come."
"The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he's still not with us. So I really don't know. Seriously, I'd say our chances are 50/50."
After being named the SEC defensive player of the year in 2013, Sam was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams. Sam was released by the Rams after training camp but signed on with the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad for part of the season.
Popp thinks Sam could excel in the CFL.
"The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style. It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best."
Sam has been on the Alouettes negotiation list since he was a senior in college, according to the Gazette report.
