Btw, this upcoming expo seems geared very much to audiophiles....even Michael Fremer is onboard.

Yet on the schedule, amid seminars on vinyl and DSD, there's this talk (to be given twice) about using two- and multichannel systems with subwoofers. What gives?
"The focus of the Seminar will be the speaker/room interface and optimizing system performance. A slide presentation will demonstrate the frequency and phase response of speakers placed properly and improperly in a room. Integrating subwoofers with the main speaker system for both stereo and surrounds systems will be covered. - See more at: http://www.axpona.com/sessions_byTrack.asp#sthash.c5bbXUjN.dpuf"

And have a hidden camera ready, it will be a good Youtube material .. LOLOh yes - try going to your local Hifi shop and asking for a music system with centre and sub and "not so crucially" full bandwidth fronts - see what they say...Tell average audiophile, it is "not so crucial", and see what happens :)Also, go to the audiophile forum, describe your system, and tell them that your system is primarily for music (of any shape/form) - see what they think :)
What I'm trying to say is - I'm not talking about how you are using it - I'm talking about what was it designed for. The second you introduce bass management - it's not designed for music - unless it's Genelec or Event :) OK now I'm being a bit cheeky... ;)Can it play music? Of course, and probably quite well.BTW, I'm into Jazz, and I would not like my double-bass coming out of my sub... ever :)

BTW the perfect center that exists,is whatever they use for front l/r. Really it's 2015, this is not new science. (And btw 'full range' front l/r loudspeakers usually aren't...but that's maybe not so crucial for music unless you're into pipe organ or electronic dance genres)Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone

And oh, this folks often do not even have a surround receiver with decoder, but instead have something like SACD player or DAC connected directly to several stereo amplifiers, or active speakers.OTOH, there are a lot of folks that built there surround or quad set-ups starting from a stereo system - by adding bits. Often without a sub, as they have "real" full band fronts, and with centre that could not possibly match the $20k front speakers - because they do not exist :)Steven, obviously, you are coming from a movie surround type of background/setup, so this type of issues do not apply to your setup.
I have both, and a few in between. And I have quite a bizarre setup in my car...And yes, I sometimes miss the days when stereo was the only game in town, and you could bet that everyone and his dog has it, and whatever I mix up will be played on it reasonably well... :)

I'm confused. Pretty much every subwoofer/bass management system I've seen, and certainly *all* that I've owned, allow bass management of the rear speakers too -- all speakers, really -- not just front. I, and every 5.1 owner I know, bass manages the surround speakers as well as fronts (if anything, it's the fronts that are sometimes left 'full range')
Also, I have always used a matched center channel (same model as front left/right) in my 5.1 systems. Same model all around, actually. It really takes the 'worry' out of speaker matching ;>

A very worthwhile 2 cents worth i feel. The issue over the players still needs to be sorted and it will be interesting to watch what happens. There's one thing for certain, there's no single option that will keep every happy. Now the point of why quad and not 5.1I can only speak from a personal point of view but i don't believe the centre channel belongs in music. Often it's a smaller speaker and tends not to blend in with the general sound-scape, often making you aware of it's presence.Plus, again personally, neither the centre channel nor sub woofer has any place in ambisonics, which i do listen to quite a bit.And on the issue of sub-woofers in surround systems, for it to sound correct i've always though that there should be a sub on the rears too. It sounds un-balanced with just one on the fronts.--
