There are various ways to simulate perception of 3-dimensional acoustic spaces, but in my view, they are not suitable for music. Plus they do not have much in common with surround sound, and almost nothing in common with discrete multi-channel surround sound.

So the answers are

1) Yes, but...

2) Many choices of medium, but only speakers in a room, configured for surround sound will deliver that surround sound to your listeners.
