TORONTO - Canadian international defender Marcel de Jong has signed with Sporting Kansas City.

The 28-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., has been on trial with the MLS club on trial last month, playing four games at fullback.

"We continue to look to add experience in the players joining our roster," Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said in a statement Monday. "Marcel's time in the German Bundesliga and with the Canadian men's national team will bring excellent experience to the team."

De Jong has won 31 caps for Canada with two goals.

He started his youth career in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven before signing professionally with second-tier Helmond Sport. He moved to Roda JC in the Dutch top-flight in 2006.

De Jong went to Germany in 2010 to join FC Augsburg.
