MALMO, Sweden — Canada opened the women's world hockey championship with a 4-2 loss to defending champion United States on Saturday.
The Americans led 3-1 after the opening period on power-play goals from Jocelyne Lamoureux, Hannah Brandt and Kendall Coyne. Hilary Knight scored in the third.
Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ont., and Jennifer Wakefield of Pickering, Ont., replied for Canada.
Jessie Vetter stopped nine of 11 shots for the win. Genevieve Lacasse of Kingston, Ont., made 30 saves in the loss.
Canada faces Russia and the United States takes on Finland in Pool A games Sunday.
