So someone over on AVS Forum mentioned that they had upgraded their 5005 to the latest firmware, and it does indeed still play SACD-R's (and burned DVD-A disks too). So I went ahead and updated and indeed it still does work! I still really wish Marantz would put out release notes on their firmware updates, but at least I know for now I'm safe to upgrade, and at least for now buying at 5005 is a safe option. I am very happy with my player btw! I've been impressed with both the sound and picture since I got it!

Hi, I have the follow up of the 5005 the 5007 and it plays sacd-r with the latest firmware (updated last week). It also plays dsd through hdmi and has stereo analog out. It is said to be a lot quicker than the 5005 in loading times.
Cheers
