SENATORS (24-23-10) at DUCKS (38-16-7)
TV: RDS, TSN5, FS-W
Season series: Rookie Mike Hoffman scored two goals and captain Erik Karlsson had two assists to help the Ottawa Senators defeat the Anaheim Ducks 6-2 at Canadian Tire Centre on Dec. 19. Ducks goalie Ilya Bryzgalov allowed six goals on 31 shots. Senators goalie Craig Anderson made 32 saves.
Senators team scope: Ottawa begins a five-game Western Conference road trip with each opponent fighting for a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Anderson, who hasn't played since Jan. 21 because of a hand injury, is likely to return during the trip. "We've still got some work to do, but it was good to be out there with the guys," Anderson told the Ottawa Sun after practice Monday. "It was a good mental lift for myself ... It's just good for me to be back with the guys and get that feeling that I'm part of the team." Defenseman Jared Cowen was suspended three games Monday for an illegal check to the head/interference against Florida Panthers forward Jussi Jokinen in a 4-1 win Saturday. First-year goalie Andrew Hammond has allowed three goals with a .955 save percentage in the Senators' two-game win streak.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim on Tuesday acquired forward Jiri Sekac from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade for forward Devante Smith-Pelly. "I'm very excited to be a part of this organization. I've heard a lot of great things about the team and the coaching staff and everything," Sekac said. A 22-year-old native of the Czech Republic, Sekac has seven goals and 16 points in 50 games this season. "I definitely think he's one of these Europeans who can skate, who has skill," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. "He's a little bit of a late bloomer, like some of them are coming from over there, but I think there's good upside offensively with this guy." Forward William Karlsson was recalled from Norfolk of the American Hockey League and Bryzgalov was reassigned. The Ducks won their third straight game, a 4-3 shootout victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. John Gibson made 35 saves in his sixth straight start in place of injured No. 1 goalie Frederik Andersen. Anaheim went 0-for-4 on the power play Monday and is 1-for-13 in its past six games.
