The Levys created and star in the Pop TV comedy about a rich, dysfunctional family who has to start over in a small town, which premieres Wednesday, Feb. 11.

The Levys play Johnny and David Rose and the show itself is the brainchild of Daniel Levy, a former MTV Canada host who brought the idea to his father, comedy great Eugene Levy, to assist with the funny factor.

"I had just a grain of an idea about exploring what would happen to a wealthy family that lost all their money," Dan tells Zap2it. "What would it mean to the family dynamic and how would they recover? I hadn't seen it explored in a funny, real way. That's why I went to my dad, because of all the work he's done with Christopher Guest and we started to flesh out what that idea could be."

As it turns out Levy was more than happy to work with his son on a project, as over the years they have never collaborated together.

"Honestly, I was excited because he's never really come to me with anything having to do with his career ... always done everything on his own," Eugene says. "I thought this would be a great project to work on with my son. I realized very early on when we were putting this together, he has amazing gifts as a writer. I didn't know how good he would be at the acting part but boom ... he's amazing on this show."

The rest of the "Schitt's Creek" cast, which includes Catherine O'Hara, Chris Elliott ( "How I Met Your Mother") and Annie Murphy ( "Blue Mountain State"), admits that at first working on a project that was a family affair was a little intimidating, but the father/son combo has been working quite well.

"These guys are actually great to work with because you forget they are father and son," Elliott, who plays mayor Roland N. Schitt, says. "They are collaborators, they're partners. It's interesting to watch them work out things and who defers to who. It seems like it is pretty equal."

Whether or not this is the first of many projects the pair work on together has yet to be determined, but the Levys are enjoying the ride so far. "I hope it goes on and on and on," Daniel adds. "We've put so much time and energy and heart into it and I'm thrilled with what we've come up with."
