PENGUINS (31-15-8) at SENATORS (21-22-9)
TV: ROOT, RDS2, TSN5
Season series: Evgeni Malkin scored two goals to help the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 win against the Ottawa Senators at Consol Energy Center on Dec. 6. Christian Ehrhoff scored the game-winner with 1:50 left in the third period.
Penguins team scope: Forward Blake Comeau returned from an upper-body injury and had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 home win against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday. "It felt good," said Comeau, who hadn't played since Dec. 22. "I had never gone through an injury like that where I missed that much time. It felt like longer than it was, just skating on my own. It definitely felt good to get back to practice on Monday and it was nice to skate on Wednesday and it's nice anytime you can contribute. But when you've been out that long, it definitely eases the mind a little bit that you can get on the scoresheet right away." Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves but his shutout streak ended at 165:06. The Penguins are within one point of the New York Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Senators team scope: Ottawa begins a five-game homestand and plays seven of eight at Scotiabank Place. The Senators, 11-9-4 at home, are hoping to have forward Bobby Ryan back in the lineup after he missed a 2-1 win at the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday because of muscle cramping. "The trainers did a lot of work [Tuesday], then I came in really early [Wednesday] morning and spent a lot of time on the table, trying to loosen up," Ryan said, according to the Ottawa Sun. "Feeling better, optimistic. There's no actual defining play or anything [that caused the cramping]. When you lock up in a pregame skate, it's hard to blame it on a hit from anybody. I think it's just wear and tear. Sometimes it happens, but it's never happened to me before. That was kind of a freak anomaly. Spent a lot of time trying to work it out, but ultimately I couldn't get it to release and get to where I felt comfortable shooting a puck. If I don't play it's not because we didn't do everything over the next 36 hours." Ryan leads the Senators in scoring with 37 points (14 goals, 23 assists).
