MAPLE LEAFS (22-25-4) at PREDATORS (32-11-6)

TV: TSN4, FS-TN

Season series: Forward Taylor Beck scored two goals and had an assist to lead eight Nashville Predators who scored goals in a 9-2 victory at the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first game. Nine Predators had multipoint games, including defenseman Shea Weber (three assists).

Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto closed out January with another loss, 1-0 at the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday and hasn't won in nine straight games (0-8-1). The Maple Leafs went 1-11-1 in January and hold a 3-17-1 mark in their past 21 games. Prior to that stretch, the Maple Leafs rattled off a season high six-game winning streak. Interim coach Peter Horachek is imploring them to create more traffic around the net to help break a scoring funk that's contributed to all the losses. Toronto has scored 13 goals in its past 16 games. Fourth-line center Trevor Smith missed practice Monday and will not play. Mike Santorelli centered that line in practice. Defensemen Dion Phaneuf (hand) and Stephane Robidas (upper body) are still sidelined indefinitely.

Predators team scope: Nashville's 4-0 win at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday ended a two-game winless skid and kept the Predators (70 points) two points ahead of the St. Louis Blues (68 points) in the Central Division. The Blues won 4-3 at the Washington Capitals on Sunday. The win for the Predators, which catapulted them to the top spot in the NHL's overall standings, was their third victory in seven games since goalie Pekka Rinne sprained his knee (3-2-2). Goalie Carter Hutton made 21 saves for his first shutout this season and second of his NHL career. It might be Hutton's last appearance for a while. Rinne traveled on the three-game road trip and worked out on the ice prior to the game Sunday in Pittsburgh, according to the Nashville Post, which said Rinne's status will be re-evaluated prior to the game Tuesday.
