Season series: Goaltender Ryan Miller made 29 saves, and Brad Richardson scored twice to help the Vancouver Canucks defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 at Rogers Arena on Oct. 28. Jiri Tlusty scored for Carolina. The Canucks have won four of their past five games against the Hurricanes.

Canucks team scope: Vancouver ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 shutout at the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. "We needed to get back in the win column," forward Jannik Hansen said. "You lose one, two in a row, it's not good; three, that's starting trouble. We need to get back on the winning track in order to keep up with the other teams." Miller, who returned after missing three games because of the flu, made 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 33rd of his NHL career. In 27 games against Carolina, Miller is 14-9-4 with a 2.61 goals-against average and .916 save percentage. Vancouver is 8-1-0 against the Metropolitan Division.

Hurricanes team scope: Forward Jordan Staal, who missed the first 36 games of the season because of a fractured fibula, scored his first goal Tuesday in a 3-2 home win against the Colorado Avalanche. Backup goaltender Anton Khudobin made 28 saves and has won his past three starts, each in a shootout. The Hurricanes are 4-1-1 in January but remain in last place in the Metropolitan Division with 33 points, six behind the Columbus Blue Jackets. Carolina will play the second of its back-to-back against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Forward Andrej Nestrasil was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Wednesday after a three-game conditioning stint; he has three points in eight games with Carolina.
