Canadian Frank Dancevic was defeated by Alex Kuznetsov of Russia early Wednesday in the first round of qualifying for the Australian Open.
The native of Niagara Falls, Ontario lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Players have to win three matches in qualifying to earn a berth in the main draw.
Dancevic played in the last year's main draw in Melbourne and was beaten in the first round by Benoit Paire of France.
The 30-year-old was the lone Canadian on the men's side of the draw.
Three Canadian women hit the court for qualifying on Thursday in Melbourne. Gabriela Dabrowski faces Yuliya Beygetzimer of Ukraine, Francoise Abanda plays Shahar Peer of Israel, and Sharon Fichman faces Elizaveta Kulichkova of Russia.
