MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica - Canada came from behind twice, but allowed a goal in the 90th minute and eventually fell 3-2 to El Savador on Thursday at the CONCACAF under-20 championship.
Romilio Hernandez was credited with the winner after the ball deflected in off his body following an original save made by Canadian goalkeeper Nolan Wirth off a free kick.
Bryan Perez put El Savador up 1-0 late in the first half before Hanson Boakai came off the bench to respond for Canada (1-0-2) in the 47th minute.
"At halftime we made a tactical change and looked to occupy spaces higher up the field and move the ball better as we'd planned from the start. Once we started to do that we created opportunities. It was a great goal from (Boakai)," said coach Rob Gale.
Jose Villavicencio regained the edge for El Savador (1-2-0) in the 77th minute, but the lead didn't last long as Kianz Froese tied the match 2-2 only two minutes later.
Canada opened its tournament with a win over Haiti, but followed that up with a loss to Mexico on Monday. It's next game is Jan. 19 against Cuba followed by a final its final Group B match against Honduras.
"We want to respond and rebuild and build momentum. We need to regroup a little bit now to do that and go forward," said Gale. "We've got two very difficult opponents that will be very similar and used to these kinds of conditions so we will respond in the right way and make sure we get it right in the next game."
Four teams from the 12-country CONCACAF championship will advance from the tournament to represent North and Central America and the Caribbean at the FIFA U20 World Cup, which kicks off May 30 in new Zealand
