ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild got off to a fast start Wednesday, but they needed Darcy Kuemper to help them fight off a slow finish.
Kuemper made 18 saves, including eight in the third period, to lead the Wild to a 2-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Xcel Energy Center.
Kuemper stopped 10 shots over the first 40 minutes before facing his stiffest tests in the third period. He lost his shutout bid at 19:02 when Alex Galchenyuk made it a one-goal game.
The Wild took the lead 19 seconds into the game on a snap shot by Jason Zucker from the right side of the net. Zucker's shot hit Carey Price's shoulder, deflected off the crossbar and rolled down the goaltender's back. It was Zucker's 10th goal.
Minnesota held a 16-6 edge in shots after the first period and continued to pepper Price but was unable to make it a two-goal game until 12:10 of the second when Jason Pominville scored his fifth of the season, snapping a 10-game goal drought. Defenseman Christian Folin fired a rising shot from the point that nearly struck Pominville in the head, but the latter ducked out of the way and raised his stick, deflecting the shot over Price's shoulder and under the crossbar. The goal was awarded after replays were inconclusive.
The Wild led 30-10 in shots after two, but Montreal came out firing in the third, putting six shots on Kuemper in the opening minutes. A major penalty by Eric Tangradi ended that momentum, but the Wild were unable to muster a shot with the five-minute man advantage.
Montreal scored its only goal with 57.6 remaining in regulation when Galchenyuk slammed home a loose puck in front with Price on the bench for the extra attacker. The goal was Galchenyuk's sixth of the season.
The Wild paid tribute to Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau prior to the game with a moment of silence. Beliveau died Tuesday at age 83.
All Montreal players wore a No. 4 sticker on their helmets to honor the former Canadiens captain.
