It appears that Ottawa Senators rookie Curtis Lazar may not be made available to participate in the IIHF World Junior hockey tournament.

According to Sportsnet's Damien Cox, Lazar's World Junior fate may rest in the hands — or wrist — of Senators teammate Zack Smith. Smith left Saturday's game versus the Boston Bruins with an upper-body injury which could be a possible wrist injury.

Should his injury be serious enough for Smith to miss a significant amount of time, it looks like Lazar would remain on the ice for the Senators through December.

Lazar, of Salmon Arm, B.C., has registered six points in 25 games with the Senators. The 19-year-old is not the only young NHL player to still have question marks surrounding his participation in Canada's campaign to win their first gold medal in five years.

The Vancouver Canucks are in a similar situation with centre Bo Horvat — they are waiting until the Dec. 19 deadline to decide if they'll loan him to Team Canada.
