Those hoping to see Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, "Lost River," in theaters won't get the chance. Warner Bros. has decided against a theatrical release and will instead release the movie through their home entertainment arm in April 2015, Variety reports.

How does a fantasy drama film directed by Gosling and starring the likes of Christina Hendricks ( "Mad Men"), Eva Mendes ("The Place Beyond the Pines"), Matt Smith ( "Doctor Who"), Saoirse Ronan ("The Grand Budapest Hotel") and Iain De Caestecker ( "Agents of SHIELD") not get a theatrical release? If the critical reviews are any indication, it's because the movie isn't very good.

Shortly after premiering at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Twitter was littered with reactions to the movie that were less than favorable. Once the reviews started coming out, the news didn't get any better.

Currently, "Lost River" sits with a 25% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Had Terrence Malick and David Lynch somehow conceived an artistic love-child together, only to see it get kidnapped, strangled and repeatedly kicked in the face by Nicolas Winding Refn, the results might look and sound something like 'Lost River,'" Variety's Justin Chang writes in one review.  Time Out New York's Keith Uhlich says the movie will ultimately leave viewers feeling "utterly unfulfilled."

At the very least, Gosling gets points for effort. Film.com's Jordan Hoffman writes, "Ryan Gosling wanted to make an art film and, despite some dull patches, pretty much succeeded." Meanwhile, BBC reviewer Nicholas Barber called the movie "the work of a surprisingly confident and experimental young filmmaker, even if he's not yet confident enough to move beyond his influences."

Luckily, the world will still get to see the movie. They'll just have to do it through streaming, video on demand, DVD and Blu-raw when "Lost River" is released in April.
