Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Movie)
TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their winning ways with a 4-3 shootout victory against the Los Angeles Kings at Air Canada Centre on Sunday.
Toronto right wing Joffrey Lupul scored the only goal of the shootout.
The Maple Leafs (18-9-3) have won five games in a row, and are 9-1-1 in their past 11 games.
Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick (27 saves) made two superb stops on Toronto center Tyler Bozak early in the first period, but was unable to handle right wing Mike Santorelli's high shot to the short side on a wrap-around at 14:00. The goal was his sixth.
Toronto defenseman Cody Franson scored at 19:30 of the first period when his low snap shot from the right point found the low far corner of the net behind Quick. Santorelli had an assist on the play, and also set a screen in front of Quick.
The Kings (15-10-6) scored two goals 3:45 apart late in the second period. Justin Williams made it 2-1 at 16:02 after the Kings flipped the puck into the Maple Leafs zone and Toronto defenseman Jake Gardiner tried to knock it down with his stick. Gardiner seemed to get a piece of it, and as it dropped to the ice, he swatted at it again knocking the puck into Williams' body. Williams tapped it past Toronto goalie James Reimer (31 saves) with a backhander.
Los Angeles forward Dwight King tied the game at 19:47 when he worked the puck to the front of the net from the corner and jammed it past Reimer.
Marian Gaborik gave the Kings their first lead at 1:02 of the third period when he took a pass from Williams at the far side of the net. Gaborik's first shot was stopped by Reimer, but Gaborik put in the rebound for his sixth goal.
When Kings forward Trevor Lewis took a high-sticking penalty at 8:41, the Maple Leafs tied the game eight seconds later with a power play goal. Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak won the faceoff against Jarret Stoll, and the Leafs connected on a tic-tac-toe play. Right wing Phil Kessel passed to Franson cutting to the net, who fed the puck to James van Riemsdyk in front, and he beat Quick for his 13th goal.
Toronto center Nazem Kadri had a chance to give the Maple Leafs the lead late in the third period when he broke in alone, but he was hooked from behind by Los Angeles defenseman Jake Muzzin and was unable to get a shot off. Muzzin was penalized for hooking.
