Re: [SurroundSound] Re: convert flac to mac...

(And my use of "more mac friendly" is not to suggest that there aren't PLENTY of ways to play FLAC's natively in OSX, just that for my personal every day listening Apple Lossless files are easier to deal with).

RW - Thank you for getting us slightly back on topic. I was going to suggest as an addition to the OP's list of things you can do to convert a FLAC to a more Mac friendly format is convert it to Apple Lossless (ALAC). I actually do this with most of my FLACs (at least the stereo ones), because for most of my every day listening it's simpler to use iTunes etc. (also means I can get them automatically backed up to iTunes Match).

I generally use XLD to convert mine (https://code.google.com/p/xld/downloads/list) and I've been very happy with it as a program.

That would be a good trick.  I would like to see you do it.

You would be able to extract an AIFF or WAV file with the same audio content as the MP3 (but taking up much more space).   If you converted the FLAC to a an MP3, you would be creating a more compressed (more quality loss) mp3, as if you had converted the original MP3 to MP3 again.

You can NOT get the same MP3 file back out.  You can get a lossless file AIFF/WAV with the exact same audio quality as the original MP3.

That is because it is a codec, not a container.

#1, FLAC is a lossless container.  If you put a lossy MP3 into it, you can retrieve that MP3 with no losses incurred.  End of story.  Secondly, if you wish to convert FLAC to a more Mac friendly type, use dbPowerAmp and convert it to ALAC which is Apple's rip-off of FLAC.  The resulting ALAC files will then allow one to retrieve the original content un-molested.  End of story...
